John Williams In Session highlights the remarkable early career of the future giant of film music, as one of the most sought-after studio pianists in Los Angeles. Long before Star Wars, Jaws, E.T., and countless other major scores, Williams was building a formidable reputation as a versatile session musician, bringing his distinctive touch to jazz, pop, soundtrack, and rock 'n' roll recordings in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Drawing inspiration from recordings made between 1956 and 1961, this collection showcases Williams working alongside an extraordinary range of artists, including Harry Belafonte, Frank Sinatra, Carmen McRae, Anita O'Day, Henry Mancini, Les Baxter, The Four Freshmen, and Marilyn Monroe. Among the many highlights are the instantly recognizable piano riff on the theme from Peter Gunn, the hit Purple People Eater, and superb performances ranging from exotic, swing, ballads, cool jazz, and big band sounds. The compilation also traces Williams' rapid development from a Juilliard-trained pianist to an arranger, conductor, and emerging composer, revealing the depth of experience that would later shape some of the most famous film scores ever written. His work alongside the leading arrangers and performers of the time helped to shape the musical voice that would soon become known worldwide.
