John Coltrane’s first masterpiece (1957) is steeped in that blue color found in its title, in the cover photo by Francis Wolff, in the name of its label (Blue Note) and, of course, in its music, so true is it that the blues is omnipresent there. Blended with the exuberance of hard bop, driven by a fine team of young wolves (including bassist Paul Chambers and drummer Philly Joe Jones), it is the source of those dazzling crescendos that would become the saxophonist’s trademark.
