Recorded live in Rome, at the Auditorium Parco della Music, last November, this album captures the exceptional meeting between the dean of Italian jazz, Enrico Rava, and the great American tenor saxophonist Joe Lovano, whose family roots are Sicilian. Rava and Lovano here form a fiery quintet alongside pianist Giovanni Guidi, with his incandescent lyricism, drummer Gerald Cleaver, whose playing is both dynamic and precise, and the rising star of the double bass, Dezron Douglas (whose ECM debut this is). The core of the program consists of a few original compositions among the most cherished by the two leaders - Enrico bringing the delicacy and complexity of pieces like 'Interiors' and 'Secrets' while Joe signs with 'Forth Worth' a vigorous Texas blues that evokes both the energies of Ornette and Dewey Redman. The record concludes with a long medley that spans the whole history of modern jazz by bringing together Lovano's theme 'Drum Song', John Coltrane's hymn 'Spiritual' and the timeless standard 'Over The Rainbow'.
