In Arabic, SERR is the secret. In Occitan, SERE is the serenity of morning clarity. Occitan and Arab musicians to perform the troubadour repertoire. Bringing these two terms together meant re-enchanting the troubadour canso and the Eastern ghazal, meant bringing together once again Bernard de Ventadorn and Farid-ud-Din Attar, meant seeking the point where everything becomes troubled, rediscovering the great songs of mystical love, the voice of the lovers of love. A first Serr trio formed by Clément Gauthier, Guilhem Lacroux and Thomas Lippens then converses with a trio of Egyptian musicians Sheikh Zain Mahmoud, Hussein El Awamy, Rabie Mahmoud. The various melodic and modal elements of each musical material are so many paths to explore, along which to journey together in the quest. A Syrian poet, Amjad Etry, carries poetry from one language to another, restoring the sonic power of speech. It is a journey toward a land that has neither name nor borders, an inner land. An island floating in the middle of the Mediterranean. One approaches it first without knowing it, without having seen it, and from then on one realizes that the journey had already begun long ago. As in René Daumal’s Mount Analogue, Serr Sere has assembled a crew defying established borders in pursuit of Joy.
