Mike Pedicin is among the great unsung pioneers of the early days of rock’n’roll. Long before Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry or Bill Haley became international stars, this alto saxophonist from Philadelphia was already setting dance halls on the American East Coast alight. At the crossroads of swing, jump blues, rhythm & blues and the first sounds of rock’n’roll, Pedicin and his explosive quintet developed an irresistible style, driven by his blazing saxophone and the dynamic vocals of Al Mauro. Despite a few hits on the national charts, including “The Large Large House” and “Shake A Hand,” major success eluded him. With restored recordings, rarities and detailed notes by rock’n’roll specialist Bill Dahl, Bear Family Records finally pays tribute to one of Philadelphia’s most exciting pioneers.
