It was in 1991 that the self-titled debut album by NEVERLAND hit the shelves. But who exactly is NEVERLAND? An American quartet that, at the time, offered melodic Hard Rock infused with Pop and bluesy influences. Some might think it's just another US Hard Rock band… Yes, but what allowed NEVERLAND to stand out from the crowd was the voice of singer Dean Ortega. Tracks like "Running On" and "Cry All Night," sometimes calm and sometimes more electric, oscillate between Hard FM, Pop, and Folk, showcasing Dean Ortega's vocal abilities, whether smooth or more aggressive. However, NEVERLAND hasn't fully revealed itself, and we discover more about this band as the tracks progress. "Take Me Higher" is a well-crafted bluesy Hard composition that sees the musicians dive into the heart of American music's roots. The well-structured mid-tempo "Drinking Again" leans towards melodic Hard Rock, while the band's fundamentally bluesy side comes through on "My Opinion," "Time To Let Go," which is very rootsy, and "Talking To You," which is rawer and enhanced by a few notes of harmonica. "For The Love" is the most Hard Rock track on the album, and we are truly impressed by the guitar prowess displayed by six-stringer Patrick Sugg. This record is completed by two ballads: "10000 Years" and "Mama Said." In this area, the American quartet has done very well, as there is a certain sensitivity and, musically, quite a few subtle melodic arrangements. We can consider this album as the one and only from this group since the second one released in 1996 went by largely unnoticed and without the presence of Dean Ortega, who was the driving force of this formation.
