As a band, Apocalypse, based in London, would hardly need any introduction. They gained a certain notoriety among fans of the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal thanks to their 1982 single 'Storm Child', followed three years later by the well-received album The Prophet, although by then the band had undergone a forced name change and was now known as Omega. Fast forward forty years and Apocalypse are back with a new album, Last Man Standing. Virtually the exclusive work of guitarist/vocalist Steve Grainger, who is indeed the last man standing after the death of his brother and drummer Marc and bassist Dave Robertson, this new Apocalypse release – or Apocalypse NWOBHM as Steve has renamed the band – is the effortless follow-up to Abandon Hope, released by High Roller Records in 2010. Last Man Standing combines new material written by Steve with older songs which, in their original form, date back to his first band and that of his brother, Phaze, but which retain the atmosphere and determination of Apocalypse. With contributions from Marc and Dave, and lyrical references to some of the band’s older tracks, Last Man Standing is the final chapter in the Apocalypse story, and a worthy addition to the band’s catalogue.
