Drum Method by Takeshi Inomata is a Japanese album from 1974 that blends jazz-funk, fusion, and soul-jazz with a very direct and percussive energy. As its title suggests, the record particularly highlights Inomata's spectacular and ultra-precise drumming, which serves as the driving force of the ensemble. Surrounding him, the arrangements leave plenty of room for groove, energetic brass, electric keyboards, and a very tight rhythm section. The album oscillates between technical, funky, and explosive passages, while maintaining a true sense of collectivity rather than just an instrumental showcase. Today, it stands as a great representative of 70s Japanese jazz-funk, sought after for its rhythmic impact and its simultaneously muscular and elegant quality.
