About
Van Morrison, Northern Ireland's voice of soul, folk and rock since the 1960s.
Van Morrison emerged from Belfast's working class to become a defining figure in soul, blues, folk rock and jazz-infused pop. Starting with showbands in Northern Ireland, he first gained wider notice as frontman of Them in the mid-1960s before launching a solo career characterized by poetic lyrics and complex compositions. His early sessions in New York produced hits like "Brown Eyed Girl," while the critically acclaimed 1968 album Astral Weeks mixed folk, jazz, and acoustic rock. Following that, 1970's Moondance brought commercial success with a broader jazz-rock sound and self-production. Morrison recorded prolifically through the decades, with albums spanning blues, rock, and pop, often exploring spiritual and Celtic themes.
