About
De La Soul, Three decades of innovative alternative hip hop from Long Island.
De La Soul consists of Kelvin Mercer, David Jude Jolicoeur, and Vincent Mason, who united as teenagers and gained early support from producer Prince Paul. Their debut album, 3 Feet High and Rising (1989), introduced a playful, sample-rich style that emphasized peace and individuality, contrasting the era’s dominant themes. They were central to the Native Tongues collective alongside groups like A Tribe Called Quest. Over years, their discography grew to include 22 vinyl releases spanning alternative, jazzy, and conscious hip hop styles, issued mainly on labels like Tommy Boy, Chrysalis, and Mass Appeal.
Vinyl collectors can find multiple pressings and colored editions for key albums, reflecting varying rarity and price points.
