About
Bob Marley, Kingston roots reggae, pressed across generations of LPs.
Marley’s catalog moves from Studio One ska and Lee Perry productions to the Island albums that reshaped reggae for LP listeners. With Peter Tosh, Bunny Wailer, the Barrett brothers and the I Threes around him, his records balance political writing, devotional Rastafari themes and tightly locked rhythm sections.
For collectors, the trail runs through 13 studio albums, French and Yugoslavian Island pressings of Exodus, later Tuff Gong editions and a busy reissue market that keeps price gaps visible from copy to copy.

The hand-built Zippo sleeve
In 1973, the first 20,000 copies of Catch a Fire came in a Zippo lighter-shaped sleeve. Rod Dyer and Bob Weiner designed it with a hinge, but the cost quickly ended that run.
Two Americans grafted onto Catch a Fire
At Basing Street, Chris Blackwell added Wayne Perkins on guitar and John “Rabbit” Bundrick on keyboards to make Catch a Fire work for rock listeners without erasing the Jamaican takes.
Vincent Ford’s songwriting credit
On Natty Dread, “No Woman, No Cry” is credited to Vincent Ford, Marley’s friend who ran a soup kitchen in Trench Town. The song’s royalties helped support his local charitable work.
Survival lost the word “Black”
For the 1979 album, the planned title was Black Survival. Neville Garrick and the team shortened it to Survival, then carried the idea through a mosaic of African flags on the cover.
Two planes to Harare
For Zimbabwe’s independence, Bob Marley effectively became the show’s producer: he chartered two planes from London with sound, lights and crew before playing Rufaro Stadium in April 1980.
