Why pre-order classical music on vinyl?

To secure the edition you want before it sells out. Classical vinyl is pressed in smaller runs than pop, and audiophile reissues or box sets are not always repressed. Pre-ordering also gives you time to compare store offers calmly before release day.

What makes a good classical vinyl pressing?

Above all, a quiet, well-centered pressing, since soft passages expose every flaw. The source matters too: original analog tapes for older recordings, a carefully prepared master for new ones. Audiophile reissue labels such as Speakers Corner and Analogue Productions have a strong reputation on both counts.

Are new classical vinyl records recorded in analog?

Rarely. The vast majority of classical recordings made today are digital, then cut to vinyl. The result can be excellent if cutting and pressing are handled well. Editions sourced from analog tapes are mostly reissues of older recordings from the analog era.

Why is a symphony split across several sides?

An LP side can only hold a limited amount of music, and less when the dynamic range is wide. A long symphony has to be split, sometimes in the middle of a movement, and some recordings run to two discs. The product page shows how many discs an edition includes.

Classical Music Vinyl Pre-orders: New Recordings and Upcoming Reissues

What you can pre-order in classical vinyl

Classical music vinyl pre-orders gather records that have been announced but are not out yet: new recordings by orchestras and soloists, reissues of landmark archive recordings, and themed box sets. Classical vinyl is pressed in smaller quantities than pop, and some editions are never repressed. Ordering before release lets you choose the edition you want and compare offers from partner stores while they are available.

The current lineup brings together very different names: the Wiener Philharmoniker, conductor Sir Simon Rattle, the Choir of King's College, Cambridge, cellist Pablo Casals, whose recordings of Bach's cello suites remain a historic benchmark, Andrea Bocelli on the crossover side, and the Kocian Quartet for chamber music. Orchestral, choral, solo and crossover records all turn up here.

Classical labels and audiophile reissues

Deutsche Grammophon and Decca remain two of the biggest names in classical vinyl, with new recordings and reissues from their historic catalogs. ECM New Series covers repertoire from early music to contemporary works. For audiophile reissues, Speakers Corner reissues recordings from the Decca, Deutsche Grammophon and Mercury catalogs, among others, and Analogue Productions offers high-end pressings of major recordings.

Source: original analog tape or digital recording
Box set: number of discs, booklet included or not
Side breaks: a symphony may be split across two sides
Quiet pressing: essential for pianissimo passages

Why pressing quality matters more in classical

Classical music swings between very soft passages and full orchestral climaxes. On vinyl, pianissimo passages reveal every bit of surface noise, and the end of each side, near the label, is more prone to distortion. That is why a careful pressing on quiet, well-centered vinyl makes a real difference, much more than a weight figure printed on a sticker.

For the great recordings of the 1950s to the 1970s, reissues cut from the original analog tapes are especially sought after. Recent recordings are almost always digital at the source, which can still sound excellent if the cutting and pressing are done well. Check the product page to see where the master comes from.
