A dub band cannot afford to stagnate, and "Modus Vivendi," Zenzile's new album, illustrates this perfectly. While the band's signature sound is recognizable from the very first off-beats, Zenzile masterfully blends its unique touch, present since its very first record, with a more rock-oriented feel than usual. Could the arrival of Alex on guitar, replacing Scott, have something to do with it? In any case, while the band leaned towards softer influences on "Totem," this time they've decided to hit us hard. The rhythm of "Wow," the opening track, clearly shows this intention, even if it is softened by the funky flute rounding off the edges. But it's primarily the guitar work that stands out on this new album: while "Mafate" treads more carefully, "Hippo" with its saturated bass, and especially "Up Is a Long Way To Go," tear our faces off with their tense and incisive riffs.
