William Hooker is a musician, composer, and poet. He has over 70 recordings as a leader, exploring jazz, contemporary music, experimental music, and multidisciplinary forms of expression (dance, silent film, spoken word, etc.). Recognized as "an iconoclast and one of the most innovative musicians and drummers of his generation" [The Wire], his latest album, Jubilation, is a perfect illustration of this. On this new album, he collaborates with Matt LaVelle on trumpet, Stevie Manning on alto saxophone, On Davis on guitar, and Adam Lane on bass. Jubilation is Hooker's fourth album with Org Music, following Flesh and Bones (2023), Big Moon (2021), and Symphony of Flowers (2019). Regarding Jubilation, Hooker states: "Our goal was to play exceptional music and share it." Recorded live in 2023 at Roulette, a renowned Brooklyn venue, the band achieves this brilliantly. This dynamic set highlights the unique talent of each musician with extended solos, introducing new elements and moving towards more intense collaboration as the piece progresses. The result, faithfully transcribed on this recording, is pure jubilation.
