VIA DOLORIS is the singular vision of Gildas Le Pape, shaped by solitude, discipline, and an unwavering sense of a job well done. Rooted in the tradition of Nordic black metal, but guided by melody and introspection, the project traces a deeply personal inner journey. “Guerre et Paix” is an album full of tension and balance, where shadow and light subtly converse. Through seven expansive compositions, VIA DOLORIS explores the fragile human psyche, traversing despair, rupture, and fleeting moments of lucidity. The music favors restraint over excess, allowing melody to express itself with serene authority. Guitars unfold in long, expressive arcs, while rhythms remain precise and anchored, supported by the nuanced drumming of Frost (Satyricon, 1349). Alternating between French, English, and Norwegian, the language carries its own emotional gravity. Folkloric and pagan echoes subtly emerge, lending the album a timeless, almost ritualistic atmosphere.
