Black Metal on vinyl: between darkness and sonic devotion
At the roots of evil: the first wave (1982-1990)
Black Metal owes its name to Venom’s eponymous 1982 album, but it was in Sweden that Bathory, driven by Quorthon’s singular vision, truly forged the genre’s aesthetics and philosophy. The first three albums, Bathory (1984), The Return…… (1985) and Under the Sign of the Black Mark (1987), laid down a deliberately abrasive lo-fi sound, tremolo-picked riffs, and a pagan, occult imagery that would become the style’s cornerstones. Meanwhile, Swiss acts Hellhammer and later Celtic Frost, with Morbid Tales (1984) and To Mega Therion (1985), injected a doom-laden heaviness and avant-garde darkness that would leave a lasting mark on the entire scene.
The Norwegian second wave: the 1990s canon
In the early 1990s, a handful of Norwegian musicians radicalised Black Metal and forged its darkest mythology. Mayhem, with vocalist Dead (who took his own life in 1991) and guitarist Euronymous, crystallised the movement’s morbid aura: the album De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas (1994) remains the genre’s ultimate landmark. Darkthrone made a drastic shift from death metal to primitive black metal on A Blaze in the Northern Sky (1992), while Emperor elevated the style to symphonic heights on In the Nightside Eclipse (1994). Burzum, Varg Vikernes’ solo project, explored repetitive, hypnotic trance on Hvis lyset tar oss (1994), and Immortal shaped an epic, frostbitten black metal on Pure Holocaust (1993). Labels like Deathlike Silence Productions (founded by Euronymous), Peaceville Records and Moonfog Productions became the discographic pillars of this era, as creative as it was tumultuous.
Cult pressings and collector’s advice
Vinyl is the ultimate format for Black Metal: large-format sleeves magnifying the iconic artworks of Necrolord, limited runs and coloured pressings are all part of the experience. First editions of Norwegian classics, especially Deathlike Silence Productions pressings (bearing the « Anti-Mosh » code) or early Peaceville copies, command impressive prices and are highly sought after. Be wary of bootlegs flooding the market, however: any Mayhem or Burzum album presented as an original edition calls for a thorough check of the matrix run-out and sleeve quality. Modern reissues from labels like Osmose Productions, Season of Mist or Back on Black offer a quality alternative for those who want to own these albums without breaking the bank. By comparing offers from various sellers, Vinyles.com helps you track down the right pressing at the best price, whether you are after an original edition or a carefully crafted reissue.
