HALF FREE

Description

Behind the plural pseudonym is the one and only Meg Remy, a multidisciplinary American artist based in Toronto, who has been blending lo-fi pop, electronic tinkering, and new wave for several years, creating a body of work where the feminist cause and the role of women in society are always central. "Half Free", her first album with 4AD, marks a new stage in the young woman's musical evolution: explosive lyrics bathed in incisive beats and ethereal loops have become the hallmark of her work with long-time producer and collaborator Onakabazien. Other notable guests also collaborated on this album, including Slim Twig from the DFA label (LCD Soundsystem, Hot Chip, Holy Ghost!), Ben Cook from the band Fucked Up, Amanda Crist from Ice Cream, and Tony Price. From "Damn That Valley", the dub-pop influenced single, to the urgency of "New Age Thriller", through the dreamy layers of "Nappy & Cream" or the splendidly Spector-esque anthem "Window Shades", one remains amazed by the variety of this album and by the young woman's voice, which is reminiscent of a certain Ronnie Spector of The Ronettes.
