Singer-songwriter Taylor Kirk, professionally known as Timber Timbre, caught attention in his home country, Canada, by offering a dark and mysterious blend of folk, blues, and indie rock that often had a sound both contemporary and ancient. His self-titled album opens with the track "Demon Host," a no-frills guitar and vocal piece, but adds increasingly complex production elements, yet still stripped down, as the record progresses. "Until the Night" is accompanied by a tinged autoharp, garage rock organ, and a languorous Eastern melody, while "Trouble Comes Knocking" is driven by a sleazy strip club saxophone and a throbbing kick drum rhythm. Throughout the album, "Timber Timbre" sounds like the soundtrack to a great 60s B-movie, both original and unsettling.
