WITH SABINE DEVIEILHE, CYRILLE DUBOIS, AND CONDUCTOR ALEXIS KOSSENKO. This highly anticipated discographic discovery of Achante and Céphise, Rameau's heroic pastoral, under the baton of Alexis Kossenko, initiated jointly by the Centre de musique baroque de Versailles and the Atelier lyrique de Tourcoing, breaks an incomprehensible silence of nearly 270 years. A world premiere featuring Sabine Devieilhe, Cyrille Dubois, David Witczak, and Judith van Wanroij. Jean-François Marmontel explains in his booklet that he has combined mythology and fairy tale into a single subject, blending the magical powers of the malevolent genius, Oroès, with the traditional tributes dedicated to Venus and Love. Of extreme orchestral and formal boldness, the work represents a considerable technical challenge for its performers. A specialist in this repertoire, Alexis Kossenko conducts Les Ambassadeurs - La Grande Ecurie. "The listener is first struck by the astonishing overture which, after a few short and very soft measures, suddenly surprises with bursts of fireworks and hunting calls imitated by the instruments (a fanfare that could almost be heard shouting " Long live the King! "). These figurations require the musicians to have great and sudden precision which, although it seems slightly lacking in the very first rockets, quickly manages to convey this joy with spontaneous and popular flair. The two lovers then enter in voice: Acanthe, embodied by tenor Cyrille Dubois, and Céphise, personified by soprano Sabine Devieilhe. The former easily captivates with his consistently dedicated interpretation and perfect diction. His final bravura aria " Aigle naissant, lève les yeux " offers above all the pleasure of appreciating, in addition to his constantly valiant and brilliant timbre, his breath control, allowing for the most beautiful vocalises, executed with great finesse and touching expressivity. The sweet Céphise is no less well defended, the tender expressivity of the soprano being further enhanced by her powerful and agile voice timbre, as well as by her stage presence that is both restrained and intense. At the end of the first act, the spectator cannot be insensitive to their touching duet " Sa fureur sera vaine si l'amour est pour nous " which responds to and contrasts with the valiant " Qu'un ennemi jaloux fasse éclater sa haine " from the choir. The elegance of baritone David Witczak is equally appreciated and yet threatening as the genius Oroès thanks to his well-grounded and well-phrased voice, just like the powerful, warm, and bright singing of soprano Judith van Wanroij. Among the other roles having some opportunities to be heard, tenor Artavazd Sargsyan offers a rich and very pleasant timbre although quickly strained in the highs, while bass-baritone Arnaud Richard showcases his powerful voice. Among the secondary female roles, Jehanne Amzal is a High Priestess of Love with a bright timbre and convincing phrasing in its simplicity, Anne-Sophie Petit, as the Second Priestess, is superbly agile and possesses a fresh, even youthful voice, well-present in the lows, while Floriane Hasler completes the trio of priestesses with balance. The collective work of the Chantres du CMBV is quite evident, demonstrating from the beginning to the end of the work a very beautiful homogeneity, which underpins all the solemnity of the choral passages. Under the lively, engaged, and caressing direction of Alexis Kossenko, the instrumentalists of Les Ambassadeurs also show homogeneity and pleasantly defend the colorful and intense orchestral texture of Rameau's work. It is especially in the numerous and incredibly charming dance numbers that this music shines in all its finesse. Among others, with the horns and clarinets, the timbre of the musettes during the minuets or other dances with pastoral airs adds an unexpected and exquisite color. The final denouement appears suddenly, without warning but everyone exclaims " Triumph, victory! A Bourbon is born! " and the two lovers can live their love without the threats of the jealous genius. This astonishing surprise of the booklet and this pleasant surprise of a new concert saved invites the listener to rejoice with the artists in this beautiful opportunity to share one of these charming lyrical treasures of the 18th century.
