A great sadness and a great joy, expressed in sacred and secular airs and cantatas, are the themes of the album Bach et Haendel by Sabine Devieilhe. Recorded with the Pygmalion ensemble and conductor Raphaël Pichon, it features appearances by baritone Stéphane Degout and lutenist Thomas Dunford and includes Bach's cantatas "Mein Herze schwimmt im Blut" and "Jauchzet Gott in allen Lande," as well as excerpts from the Brockes Passion and Giulio Cesare by Haendel. "This may be the most personal interpretation I have recorded so far," confides Sabine Devieilhe, "and I was fortunate to record it with the Pygmalion ensemble and my husband Raphaël Pichon. We really wanted to convey the idea of a human emotion that sometimes surpasses our understanding and creates music of extraordinary drama."
