Description

The return of the American activist and poet "Jazz Codes" is Moor Mother's second and latest album, following her 2021 release "Black Encyclopedia of the Air." On this new album, she uses free jazz as a starting point, but the tracklist continues the recent shift in Moor Mother's multifaceted catalog towards more melody, more sung vocals, more backing vocals, more complexity. In its warm and dense journey through jazz, blues, soul, hip-hop, and other classic Black American music traditions, "Jazz Codes" drifts the ear and frees the mind from habits. Songwriter, singer, poet, and educator Camae Ayewa spent years organizing and performing in Philadelphia's underground music community before moving to Los Angeles to teach composition at the Thornton School of Music at the University of Southern California.
