With Laurel Hell, Mitski confirms her status as an artist capable of transcending the pop format to turn it into a space for intimate and universal exploration. While most albums only seek to entertain, this one addresses the flaws left by a fractured and catastrophe-marked era, transforming pain and alienation into a kind of restorative elixir. Following the critical success of Be the Cowboy (2018) and the renown gained since Puberty 2 (2016), Mitski delivers her most meticulously crafted project here: tracks some of which were written as early as 2018, shaped then finalized in 2021 alongside her long-time collaborator Patrick Hyland. The context of the pandemic and isolation fueled the process, giving the songs new forms and meanings over time, like seeds that blossomed into flowers. Through Laurel Hell, Mitski tackles the false mirrors of celebrity and the digital age, but also the duality of our human experiences: vulnerability and resilience, pain and wonder, fall and rebirth.
