With Laurel Hell, Mitski confirms her status as an artist capable of transcending the pop format to turn it into a space for intimate and universal exploration. While most albums only seek to entertain, this one addresses the cracks left by a fractured and catastrophe-ridden era, transforming pain and alienation into a kind of restorative elixir. Following the critical success of Be the Cowboy (2018) and the recognition gained since Puberty 2 (2016), Mitski delivers her most meticulously crafted project yet: some songs were written as early as 2018, shaped and finalized in 2021 alongside her long-time collaborator Patrick Hyland. The context of the pandemic and isolation fueled the process, giving the songs new forms and meanings over time, like seeds that blossomed into flowers.
