With Laurel Hell, Mitski confirms her status as an artist capable of transcending the pop format to turn it into a space for intimate and universal exploration. While most albums only seek to entertain, this one addresses the flaws left by a fractured and catastrophe-ridden era, transforming pain and alienation into a kind of restorative elixir. Following the critical success of Be the Cowboy (2018) and the recognition gained since Puberty 2 (2016), Mitski delivers her most meticulously developed project to date: tracks, some written as early as 2018, shaped and finalized in 2021 alongside her long-time collaborator Patrick Hyland. The context of the pandemic and isolation fueled the process, giving the songs new forms and meanings over time, like seeds that blossomed into flowers. Through Laurel Hell, Mitski tackles the false mirrors of celebrity and the digital age, as well as the duality of our human experiences: vulnerability and resilience, pain and wonder, fall and rebirth.
