L.A. Witch has always exuded an air of effortless cool, from the dark Americana and laconic rock’n’roll of their self-titled debut to the stark, searing adventurism of their sophomore album Play With Fire. The band — comprised of Sade Sanchez (guitar/vocals), Irita Pai (bass), and Ellie English (drums) — started informally, but the smoldering, reverb-drenched incantations they created soon seduced audiences, propelling the project from the insular space of the band’s friends and peers in Southern California to the wider world. On their new album, DOGGOD, the trio push their artistry beyond its previous creative and geographical confines, opting to create the material in Paris, tracking the songs at Motorbass Studio on Rue des Martyrs. DOGGOD explores larger sonic terrains, utilizes a larger arsenal of sounds, and probes wider existential and cosmic themes, all while maintaining the band's characteristic sense of the forbidden and abandoned. DOGGOD is a way of addressing the universal enigma surrounding the spiritual nature of love and devotion. These conflicting explorations of love and submission manifest themselves in L.A. Witch’s fusion of their signature smoky garage alchemy with a disciplined approach to icy post-punk instrumentation.
