The title of the album – 'Words Unspoken' – alludes to the instant musical understanding between the members of this agile quartet brought together by the great British master of the wind instrument John Surman. Surman and American vibraphonist Rob Waring – both residents of Oslo – had already collaborated within John’s trio Invisible Threads with Nelson Ayres, but the associations with Norwegian drummer Thomas Strønen and British guitarist Rob Luft were new. With these four sharp-minded musicians, all discussions take place in the music, fueled by the strongly melodic themes and Surman's improvisational imagination. 'Words Unspoken' is released as the quartet prepares for an international tour. “My idea was to gather a few musical ideas that would provide a collective purpose while being open enough to allow each of us to suggest other ways to develop the material together. Everything fell into place immediately. But I quickly realized that it wasn’t so much the musical ideas that made it work, but the musicians.”
