Techno on vinyl: Why the black format remains the ultimate medium
Detroit, 1985: the roots of the movement
It all started in the suburbs of Detroit, where three high school friends, Juan Atkins, Derrick May, and Kevin Saunderson, known as the Belleville Three, laid the foundations of techno. Their sound emerged from a visionary fusion of Kraftwerk's electronic experiments, Parliament-Funkadelic's basslines, and the raw energy of Chicago house. Juan Atkins, under the alias Model 500, released « No UFO's » (1985) on his Metroplex label, widely regarded as the first techno record. Derrick May delivered the timeless anthem « Strings of Life » (1987), while Kevin Saunderson's Inner City project propelled « Big Fun » and « Good Life » onto dancefloors worldwide. These original pressings on Metroplex, Transmat, and KMS remain some of the most sought-after pieces among vinyl collectors.
From Berlin to Manchester: The European explosion and cult labels
Techno crossed the Atlantic in the late 1980s and found a second home in Berlin, in the vaults of the Tresor club. The eponymous label released Jeff Mills, Underground Resistance, and Robert Hood, defining a raw, hypnotic sound that shaped an entire generation. In Belgium, R&S Records pushed boundaries with Joey Beltram (« Energy Flash ») and early Aphex Twin releases; in the UK, Warp Records reinvented ambient techno through its Artificial Intelligence series. Sweden's Adam Beyer championed Scandinavian minimalism via Drumcode, while Richie Hawtin explored minimalist depths with Plastikman and his Plus 8 imprint. Whether you're after an original 90s Tresor pressing or a high-quality reissue of a Warp classic, Vinyles.com helps you compare prices across multiple online record stores so you can pick the offer that best fits your collection.
