They share a wonderful sense of freedom, the joy of playing together and collectively finding new ways to bring jazz to life. More importantly, they bear witness to the eclecticism and openness of British jazz from the mid to late sixties, as well as John Surman's creative ambitions. With his first album currently unavailable, this recording is an essential purchase for Surman fans.The John Surman-Mike Osborne Quartet recorded tracks 1 to 5 for the BBC Light Programme on February 26, 1967, and the other tracks come from a calypso jazz session by John Surman and Russ Henderson for BBC Radio 1 Jazz Club on July 17, 1968.Liner notes by Duncan Heining, with suggestions from John Surman.
