After more than twenty years of collaboration, Hammock continues its sonic exploration with The Second Coming Was A Moonrise. The title evokes a period of experimentation where, at the end of his adolescence, Byrd and a friend, under the influence of psychedelics, mistook the moonrise for the return of Christ. Byrd and Thompson, both primarily guitarists, have seen their musical bonds strengthen over the years, their joint work gaining in intensity and richness. They seek a feeling of sonic wonder, both grandiose and shimmering, impossible to summarize otherwise. The Second Coming Was A Moonrise extends this exploration, offering an intimate and majestic work. The album is largely instrumental or merely adds murmurs and vocal textures, always with carefully chosen titles. Byrd revisits his drug-induced escapes with “Chemicals Make You Small”, a track that welcomes two notable guests: Wayne Coyne and Steven Drozd of the Flaming Lips, on vocals and keyboards respectively. Among the other guest musicians are his regular collaborator Matt Kidd of Slow Meadow on strings and guitar, Matthew Doty of Deserta on synthesizers and guitar, Christine Byrd of Lumenette on angelic vocals, Chad Howat on keyboards and bass, and Jake Finch on drums.
