Going against the grain of a world saturated with distractions, Hammock creates cinematic music geared towards introspection. Marc Byrd and Andrew Thompson, based in Nashville, weave soundscapes that blend ambient post-rock, luminous melancholy, and neoclassical drama. Through their ethereal compositions, they evoke tender memories and profound sorrows, inviting listeners to slow down, feel, and contemplate. The triptych Mysterium, Universalis, and Silencia, begun in 2017 and completed in 2019, marks a major turning point in their journey. Born from the brutal bereavement of Byrd's nephew, Mysterium explores irreparable loss. Universalis attempts to grasp its meaning, while Silencia anchors itself in a reality transformed by silence. This trilogy, imbued with pure emotion, established itself as a pivotal work in their discography. With Elsewhere, Hammock returns to the heart of post-pandemic isolation, with each member recording from home, with limited resources. The album evokes unanswered absences, imposed distances, and the desire for escape. It offers no escape, but a clear reminder: it's time to live, rather than waiting to be elsewhere.
