If GREEN CARNATION had never reformed, the Norwegian bards would forever be remembered for completing one of the most ambitious individual epics in metal history. Yet, a story eluded them for over thirty years. After reaching dizzying heights in the first chapter, they delve into deeper, darker, and more personal abysses with the second part of ‘A Dark Poem’.
If ‘The Shores of Melancholia’ set sail from a familiar place steeped in melancholy, ‘Sanguis’ opens in the open sea, struggling to stay afloat against the raging storm in their minds. For nine minutes, the epic title track promises to forgive and forget family dramas, erasing the bloody stains of the past with passionate clean vocals and a chorus filled with conviction – before a traumatic memory resurfaces in a most somber finale. The raw power of the first part of "A Dark Poem" improves with time, blending meaty riffs and underlying bitterness. “I Am Time” immediately stands out with a winding guitar melody, like the winds of change. But the second part reveals the band in all its glory, with ballads that blossom with the grace of a faded flower.
"The end justifies the means, you'll see," Kjetil Nordhus sings with strangely calm assurance. As his final tale fades under the moonlight, ‘Sanguis’ leaves its fans in suspense as to the end of this trilogy.
