The Sorcerer

Description

Released in 1967, 'The Sorcerer' is a live album recorded the same year at the Jazz Workshop in Boston. The purity of his playing and his excursions into Central European territories make this masterpiece an essential work. The most New York-sounding Hungarian guitarist in jazz history, he would leave a lasting impact on the genre with his ability to redefine the contours of a music for which he opened the doors to hybridization. Upon his arrival in the United States in the mid-50s, the young musician discovered jazz and the artistic emulation surrounding it. After a remarkable debut in Chico Hamilton's quintet, Gábor Szabó imposed his Eastern European roots on the jazz scene and contributed to the emancipation of this new genre. He would not only perform alongside leading figures in the genre but also with rock artists, most notably Carlos Santana.
