Since their debut in 1996 with their self-titled album, these Norwegians have pushed the boundaries of traditional black metal. Over the past 30 years, the band has expanded its repertoire to include prog, neofolk, and dark, enchanting hard rock, crowned by major international tours and chart rankings around the world. After eleven albums, they reached a new creative peak with ‘True North’ in 2019. ‘True North’ placed BORKNAGAR at a crossroads. Half of the band had left, but the founding members kept the group on a dizzying upward trajectory. Armed with irresistible new compositions, founder and guitarist Øystein took the opportunity to bring back the versatile ICS Vortex (Arcturus, ex-Dimmu Borgir) to the microphone. His clear and thunderous vocals shine amidst the warm, vaporous keyboard layers on the classic “Up North,” while his screams tear through the most infernal passages of “The Fire That Burns.” Loudwire ranked the album among the best of 2019.
