Opera and lyrical singing on vinyl: Vocal art in all its analog splendor
An incomparable sonic heritage: from 78 RPM pioneers to the golden age of the LP
The history of recorded opera begins with Enrico Caruso's legendary Victor 78s, cut as early as 1904, which laid the foundation for an entire industry. In the 1950s and 1960s, the arrival of the stereo microgroove LP opened a new chapter: major record labels invested heavily in capturing the greatest voices under unparalleled studio conditions. This era gave us the definitive complete recordings, La Traviata, Tosca, Carmen, La Bohème, Don Giovanni, that still thrill collectors today, drawn to the unmatched warmth and presence of vinyl.
Legendary recordings every music lover dreams of owning
Certain records have left an indelible mark on operatic history. Maria Callas's Tosca conducted by Victor de Sabata (1953, EMI/Columbia) remains an absolute peak, as does Wagner's Ring cycle recorded by Georg Solti for Decca between 1958 and 1965, the first complete studio Ring. Karajan's La Bohème with Pavarotti and Freni (1972, Decca), Callas's Norma (1954), and Joan Sutherland's The Art of the Prima Donna (1960, Decca), a true bel canto manifesto, are equally essential. These treasures surface on both the second-hand and new markets, and Vinyles.com lets you compare prices across sellers to track down that coveted gem at the best rate.
Labels, pressings, and editions: navigating the lyrical vinyl market
Collectors primarily hunt for Deutsche Grammophon pressings (recognisable by their famous yellow 'tulip' label), early stereo Decca 'wide band' issues, EMI His Master's Voice with the Nipper dog, and RCA Victor Red Seal editions. An original pressing in excellent condition can multiply a record's value by five or ten compared to a later reissue. The key lies in examining the matrix code etched into the dead wax and the design of the centre label, two details that tell the true story of any pressing.
