Seven years after The Dusk Loom in 2019, Petrels returns with two new albums, Infangthief and Outfangthief. The first of these releases, Infangthief, was initially written and recorded in 2022, before being reworked following a subsequent album, Outfangthief, due out later this year. The two albums serve as complementary pieces, reflecting facets of one another, overlapping in sound and subject matter. Although Outfangthief was written after Infangthief, it is not a simple sequel; its own creation prompted a revisiting and reinterpretation of the previous album, which in turn influenced the writing of its twin album. Petrels is the solo project of musician and artist Oliver Barrett. Since the release of his debut album, Haeligewielle, in 2011 (#9 in A Closer Listen’s list of the best albums of the decade), Petrels has toured across Europe and shared the stage with artists such as Jóhann Jóhannsson, Tim Hecker, FIRE !, Nate Young (Wolf Eyes), Trouble Books, Demdike Stare, Nadja and Hans-Joachim Roedelius (Cluster). Working from his home in Somerset, UK, Barrett has released numerous albums via his label Floating Limb, as well as hundreds of mixes and/or masters for artists such as Keiji Haino, Loren Connors & Alan Licht, Judith Hamann, Incapacitants, Mette Rasmussen & Sofia Jernberg, Yasunao Tone and many others. “Petrels avoids the coolness present in much of his peers’ music, replacing it with an almost spiritual ecstasy, his ravishing synths and almost choral vocal treatments calling out with cosmic, wide-eyed wonder at the universe.” – Paul Margree, Louder Than War
