When Claire Diterzi revisits Tolstoy, tragedy is reinvented as feminist rock opera. With FILLE DE, the soundtrack to her new show Anny Karénine, Claire Diterzi extends her artistic quest for emancipation by giving voice to a “daughter of”: Anny, the fictional heir to Tolstoy’s heroine Anna Karenina, is thus propelled from Tolstoyan Russia to contemporary France. Orphaned by a literary superstar, Anny, an aspiring drummer, confronts maternal ghosts and the injunctions of lineage, in a musical epic made of resilience, dark humor, and a drive for life. Twelve songs like so many coming-of-age tales, carried by a male trio with the accents of a deviant Orthodox choir, balalaikas, Bulgarian voices, nods to French chanson and cold wave. An unclassifiable artist, the first non-classical musician at the Villa Médicis, Claire Diterzi has blended rock, theater, performance, and sound creation for over 30 years. Revealed with Boucle (2006), she has never stopped blurring the boundaries between genres with demanding shows. Since 2014 and the creation of her company Je garde le chien, she has cultivated a deeply alive, free, feminist, and poetic art.
