Fort du succès immense qu’avaient connu Dido & Aeneas et King Arthur, Purcell porta à la scène en 1692 le fameux Songe d’une nuit d’été de Shakespeare sous ce nouveau titre de The Fairy Queen (La Reine des fées). Il s’agit en fait d’un « semi-opéra » ou opéra à dialogues », la musique n’intervenant qu’à l’occasion de scènes particulières. Mais c’est ainsi que ce Songe d’une nuit d’été visité par « l’Orphée anglais » devint quasiment aussi célèbre que la pièce qui lui avait donné naissance : scènes d’amour, scènes surnaturelles et un sens inné de l’humour musical confèrent à cette savoureuse imbrication théâtrale un parfum irrésistible.
