Paul Robeson, baryton-basse afro-américain, acteur de théâtre et de cinéma, joueur de football américain, avocat et défenseur des droits civiques, s'est ouvertement opposé au racisme, au colonialisme et à l'injustice sociale. Diplômé de l'université de Rutgers, érudit des cultures du monde et parlant plus de 20 langues, il a travaillé sans relâche pour faire tomber les barrières politiques et raciales et pour jeter des ponts entre les peuples de ce monde. Cependant, avec l'avènement de la guerre froide et lapeur rouge qui a suivi la Seconde Guerre mondiale, le climat politique a changé. Les portes commencent à se fermer pour Robeson, les salles de concert et les stations de radio l'excluant. En juillet 1950, le département d'État américain révoque le passeport de l'artiste inscrit sur la liste noire, l'empêchant ainsi de poursuivre sa carrière internationale de chanteur et d'acteur. Mais le public international a continué à l'honorer et à l'appeler, et il a trouvé des moyens technologiquement avancés et efficaces pour atteindre ses communautés dans le monde entier.Aujourd'hui, sa voix remarquable et sa présence inégalée sur scène se perpétuent dans les enregistrements sonores et les films. Cette édition de 14 CD est la première à contenir l'intégralité de ses enregistrements chez Columbia, Victor et HMV de 1925 à 1947. Tous ses enregistrements américains ont été méticuleusement restaurés à partir des bandes et disques originaux, et 25 enregistrements de studio - ainsi que ses récitals historiques complets de New York et de Londres en 1958 - sont présentés ici pour la première fois sur CD.Le livre de 160 pages richement illustré, avec des essais de Shana L. Redmond et Susan Robeson, rend hommage à une icône culturelle du XXe siècle.
