Paraissant dans la série "Archives" de Joni Mitchell, ce coffret 6 vinyles THE ASYLUM YEARS (1976-1980) revient sur ses albums de la seconde moitié des années 70, où le Jazz devient de plus en plus présent dans son songwriting : Hejira (1976 - qui contient "Coyote", et "Furry Sings The Blues" avec Neil Young à l'harmonica), Don Juan's Reckless Daughter (1977 - double album expérimental qui inclut "Paprika Plains"), Mingus (1979 - auquel Charles Mingus contribua) et l'album Live Shadows and Light (1980 - qui contient notamment "Amelia", "Dreamland", "The Dry Cleaner From Des Moines"). Le célèbre bassiste et compositeur Jaco Pastorius a participé à chacun de ces albums, aux côté d'autres jazzmen tels que Charles Mingus et Herbie Hancock. Les albums de ce coffret ont été remasterisés par Bernie Grundman d'après les masters analogiques d'origine. La pochette, abstraite, est basée sur un extrait d'une peinture originale de Joni Mitchell. Notes de pochettes par Meryl Streep.
