Sun

Description

With Sun, the Tennessee-born baritone saxophonist delivers an album at a crossroads, between spiritual jazz and free folk, where improvisation is not a style but a way of life. Zoh Amba's first album for the Norwegian label Smalltown Supersound – after Oh Sun released in 2022 on Tzadik – this new project also marks the birth of a new group, formed especially for the occasion. Surrounded by Caroline Morton (double bass), Lex Korton (piano), and Miguel Marcel Russel (percussion), Amba wanted to build chemistry even before thinking about the studio: no scores, no directions, just the present moment. From this collective immersion came vibrant, instinctive music, captured with recording techniques as free as the compositions themselves. Sun also pays tribute to Peter Brötzmann, a towering figure of European free jazz and Amba's spiritual mentor, whose legacy hovers over the album. Between sacred fire and letting go, Sun is a work in motion, driven by a common quest: to make music a space of shared truth, beyond forms and genres.
