When one thinks of Yann Tiersen, dozens of words can come to mind to describe his music: touching, deeply human, inherently captivating... Music with a strong emotional impact, where everyone can find their own interpretation. However, one cannot help but think that there is something else, a small detail that sets him apart from others. And the fact is that from the release of his first album, La Valse Des Monstres, each track already carried a perfectly identifiable signature, and it seems that the many emotions generated by his music are ultimately just a consequence of this strong identity, something so rare at the time, almost vanished today. Whatever the instrument used or the form practiced, this unique aura was always there, like artists such as Philip Glass or Erik Satie. Often, a single listen was enough to be captivated, as was the case for the label Ici d'Ailleurs (then called Sine Terra Firma) the day it received the young musician's demo cassette. As was the case for Jean-Pierre Jeunet when he accidentally heard a track in one of his assistant's cars, leading to the collaboration we know (too?) well (Le Fabuleux Destin d'Amélie Poulain). As was the case for millions of people at the time, and as will probably be the case for millions more in the future. Timelessness is surely Yann Tiersen's second great strength, and it seems obvious that La Valse Des Monstres, Rue Des Cascades, or Le Phare are by no means soundtracks of a particular period, much less generational albums. Titles like "La Dispute", "La Pièce Vide" or "Comptine d'Été" are obvious proofs, as the emotion remains intact more than 15 years after their release. And today, perhaps even more than a reference, Yann Tiersen seems to be above all an influence. His language has undoubtedly left its mark on many artists, recognized or not, in their way of feeling, perceiving, and writing music. This unique vision will lead to numerous collaborations, including Shannon Wright, Bästard, Noir Désir ("A Ton Étoile"), Dominique A (who performs 2 tracks on Le Phare), Matt Elliott (Dust Lane), and The Married Monk (Tout est Calme).
