Although he spent his formative years listening to everything from Yes to Photek, Scott Hansen, aka Tycho - or ISO50, his graphic artist pseudonym - did not get his hands on a real guitar or a drum machine until he left his hometown of Sacramento for San Francisco in 1995. As constant as his two creative facets have been, nearly a decade passed before the release of Tycho's first true album, Sunrise Projector (which was later expanded and reissued under the title Past Is Prologue). And while three notable singles have emerged since then, the sum of all these parts falls short of the double-exposure soundscapes of Dive. Dive, originally released in 2011, pays homage to Tycho's prismatic past but spends most of its time pointing toward the not-so-distant future of the project. This takes several forms, from the halcyonic hooks and hopeful horizons of "A Walk" to the highly expressive sound poetry of the title track, an eight-minute epic that unfolds like a compressed concept album. Or at the very least, a restless vision of prog-rock - a vision coated in neon colors and filtered through a thick sheet of blotting paper. And then there's "Elegy," a stripped-down closing track that combines a vulnerable crescendo to build a bridge to future works. With this, Dive stands as the most diverse musical statement in Hansen's multimedia career, the point where his skills as a performer finally catch up with his evaporated vision of a world that belongs to no particular time or place.
