Sonny Clark, who died at 31, is one of a long list of good jazz musicians who passed away too young. This 1957 album perfectly encapsulates the definition of jazz at that time. It has become one of the best jazz albums of all time. Sonny Clark plays on this album with beautiful perfection and (with the excellent work of Paul Chambers on bass and "Philly" Joe Jones on drums), their playing really swings. Sonny shines on "Tadd's Delight" and "I Didn't Know What Time It Was" with the unwavering support of Chambers and "Philly" Joe. He rises to the challenge of "Be-Bop," a very difficult song, and succeeds with his typical Sonny Clark touch.
