Over his 34 years on stage with Don Cherry, Jan Garbarek, John McLaughlin, Joe Zawinul and Pat Metheny, and since his debut as a leader in 1988, Indian drummer and tabla master Trilok Gurtu has always locked himself in the studio with his faithful musicians with an album already finalized in his head. For his 21st recording, Trilok decided to try something completely different. Avoiding the band concept, Gurtu improvised in the studio on a range of instruments: tablas, drums, keyboards, electric bass, and the Basic 1, a revolutionary string percussion hybrid created by visionary Ferdinand Forsch. With the help of co-producer Carlo Cantini on keyboards and Robert Miles, who produced *Miles-Gurtu* in 2004, an album where electronic sounds played a significant part, they laid the foundations for the suite “No Fear.” Trilok’s new album, *One Thought Away*, is the expression of an artist in search of a form of truth.
