In 2014, Thom Yorke surprise-released a new solo album for paid legal download on the peer-to-peer platform BitTorrent, intending to experiment with new music distribution methods, much like Radiohead had previously done with In Rainbows.
His second solo album eight years after The Eraser, the British artist not only surprised with this controversial distribution method but also embarked on a true sonic experimentation, always supported by the faithful Nigel Godrich on production: electronic sounds, deep bass, melancholic piano, robotic coldness, unsettling rhythms, and minimalist melodies. While some ingredients from the Radiohead cauldron are present, nothing here offers comfort despite Yorke's familiar, beautifully mournful and ethereal voice.
Disconcerting, complex, intriguing – there's no shortage of adjectives to describe these explorations, but Tomorrow's Modern Boxes further solidifies the Radiohead frontman's status as a unique creator. This physical edition is an opportunity to be reminded of that once again.
