3 years after *Strange House* and its wave of hits, Londoners The Horrors make their grand return, and what a return it is! This second album, *Primary Colours*, is, in my opinion, one of the best records released this year in England. They cast aside the rough & violent side of the first album to dive directly into the intricate depths of an exceptionally good second album: polished production, and vocals & composition at a level above their previous efforts. The Horrors mark a turning point here: the album sounds very 80s, reminiscent of NEU!, Jesus & Mary Chain, and at times even Joy Division. "Mirror's Image," the first track, is a perfect introduction: its synth, both exhilarating and gothic, effortlessly transports us into the band's universe. I wondered at times if I wasn't actually listening to something that had already been done, but no. I truly believe they take us beyond our hopes and what we expected of them. Following are tracks like "New Ice Age," "Primary Colours," "I Only Think Of You," and the excellent "Sea Within A Sea," all of which bring to mind the era of Sonic Youth, Velvet Underground, Siouxsie... The Londoners, led by the great Faris, thus kick aside all those wet-firecracker bands we're used to listening to. With this second album, they show what they're capable of and are undoubtedly destined for a brilliant future.
