THE GRAND RETURN OF A GUITAR GENIUS
Sonny Landreth is one of the greatest contemporary American guitarists, having accompanied numerous renowned artists such as John Mayall, Gov't Mule, Eric Clapton, and Buddy Guy. It is therefore natural that he now joins the list of prodigious guitarists who have signed with Provogue. Especially since our man is not only a superb six-string technician but also one of the very best slide guitar specialists.
This new studio album clearly marks a return for Sonny Landreth to his musical roots. And his roots are deeply embedded in the emotion and elemental structures of the blues. While this album is a wonderful tribute to the genre, it doesn't prevent Sonny from gracing us with high-flying jazz passages or sublime classic rock parts that reflect his rich artistic visions.
There are also two superb covers that Landreth makes his own with brilliance: Robert Johnson’s “Walkin’ Blues” and Elmore James’s “Dust My Broom,” as well as a wonderful “Firebird Blues” in memory of Johnny Winter. In conclusion, this is undoubtedly the most original and ambitious album to date from Sonny Landreth, who also reveals himself here as an excellent singer in addition to being a marvelous guitarist.
