Description
Sir Simon RATTLE Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra STRAVINSKY The Rite of Spring 100th anniversary of the creation of the work The Rite of Spring (1947 edition) Symphonies of Wind Instruments (1920 version) Apollon Musagète (revised edition 1947) “It is no coincidence that the creation of The Rite of Spring, one of the musical cornerstones of the 20th century, occurred in 1913, just before the greatest explosion humanity has ever known. Stravinsky attempts to capture the violence, the spirit of the earth opening beneath humanity's feet. It is the musical metaphor of a world on the verge of cracking.” Simon Rattle. The new recording of The Rite of Spring by Simon Rattle celebrates the 100th anniversary of its creation at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris on May 29, 1913, which caused a memorable scandal, as the audience was stunned by what they discovered. In The Rite, Stravinsky works on 2 aspects: rhythm, with unprecedented dynamism and energy, and harmony, which partly relies on the use of sound aggregates, all breaking with the melodic obligation that had prevailed for centuries. This musical revolution makes Stravinsky's score one of the most important works of the 20th century, which has inspired legendary choreographies such as those by Maurice Béjart, Pina Bausch, Angelin Preljocaj, or Martha Graham. A few days after the first performance of The Rite, Stravinsky fell ill and had to spend six weeks in a health facility in Neuilly-sur-Seine. It was not until 1914 that the composer would experience triumph. After a concert audition in Paris, the musician was carried through the streets in the arms of his admirers. The dark power of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra combined with Simon Rattle's rare expertise in 20th-century music makes this recording a highly anticipated event. Also included are two new recordings of the Symphonies of Wind Instruments and Apollon Musagète, another serene ballet masterpiece by Stravinsky.
