In 1999, Sir Simon Rattle succeeded Claudio Abbado as Principal Conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic. He gave his first concert on September 7, 2002, conducting performances of Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 5 and Thomas Adès’ Asyla, a "spicy blend of tradition and modernity" (The Guardian). These performances received excellent reviews from the press worldwide and the recording of Gustav Mahler's Symphony No. 5 released at the time was awarded numerous prizes. To this day, this recording is one of his most popular albums. This recording is available on limited edition vinyl for the first time.
