THE REVIVAL OF BRITISH FOLK
Sam Lee releases his fourth studio album, "songdreaming", following his excellent previous effort, "Old Wow," in 2020. "songdreaming" was recorded throughout 2023. Sam continues his work with producer Bernard Butler and long-time collaborator, arranger, and composer James Keay, to create an album rich in musicality and invention.
While 'songdreaming' is built on a framework of double bass, percussion, and violin, it is infused with a world of instruments such as the Arabic Qanun, Swedish Nyckelharpa, small pipes, and many more. Across its ten tracks, Sam delivers an album that ranges from more immediately identifiable acoustic songs to drone soundscapes, including the lead single "Meeting Is A Pleasant Place," propelled by electric guitar and a gospel choir, featuring the first appearance of Trans Voices, a London-based transgender choir.
It's an album that can incorporate the beautiful ballad of "Sweet Girl McRee" as well as the gospel hues of "Leaves of Life" while also housing the background noise of the album opener "Bushes and Briars," a song detailing Sam's rage at the treatment and state of the wild world.
Nature and the wild world remain Sam's primary lyrical concern. He describes the album as "a mosaic of emotions experienced during my outdoor excursions, which artistically emerge in moments of reflection where I am allowed to recount and articulate the complexity of all I witness and thus feel responsible for." By choosing songs directly linked to the nature of the British Isles, woven into its very being, Sam continues to reinvent and modernize a tradition of communion with the land through song.
